Boiserie

The first examples of boiseries were real inlays, but later often painted panels were found instead of inlaid. Wood paneling was very popular in France in the 17th and 18th centuries for interior decoration. In the palace of Versailles there are numerous examples of this type of decoration. The panels were often used not only to decorate the walls but also to decorate doors, partitions and booths.
